Contact messages. What you send through the contact form goes to my own server, in Germany, with the time you sent it, the address of the page you sent it from, your browser's language, and a code made from your internet address that changes every day (it links messages sent on one day, against abuse, and can never be turned back into your address). It is kept for about a year so that I can reply (its backups for one more month), and it is never passed on or used for anything else. If my server can't be reached, your browser keeps the message and sends it the next time you open the contact page. My reply comes by email, so our exchange then stays in my mailbox like any other email.
Reading figures. Every time an issue of the Weekly News Brief or an article on this site is opened, my own server adds one to its count, the way a print run counts copies. For each visit it also notes the date and time, how far you read and for how long the page was in front of you, the website you came from (its name only, never the page), your country (from Cloudflare) and whether you are on a phone, tablet or computer. No cookie is set: the page keeps a random number for the open tab, which your browser forgets when you close it, so that reloading does not count again. Nothing is passed on to anybody else. The reading figures never keep your address or browser details: they are turned into a code with a random key that changes every day and is never written down, so the figures cannot be turned back into an address, or link one day's visit to another's. Each visit counts, every time you come back. The record of each visit is deleted after a year, and its backups a month later; only the totals are kept after that. An issue shows how many times it has been opened once that reaches 100.
If you'd rather not be measured. Press the button below, or set your browser to ask websites not to track you (Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track): either way, the reading figures then hold only which issue or article was opened, and when. Nothing about how you read, where you came from, your country or your device, and no code is made from your address. The button keeps your choice in this browser.
Your browser asks websites not to track you, so your reading here is not measured: each time you open an issue or article it counts as one opening, and nothing more goes into the figures.
Your reading on this browser is not measured: each time you open an issue or article it counts as one opening, and nothing more goes into the figures.
This browser would not let the site remember your choice. Its own privacy setting, Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track, does the same.
Nothing else. No advertising, no analytics service and no cookies of mine; the pages load nothing from other websites. Like every website, my server keeps ordinary access logs (the internet address, the time, the page asked for, the page that linked to it and your browser's details) for two weeks, and Cloudflare, which protects it, keeps its own for a short time; both are for security, and neither is used for the reading figures. Cloudflare may set a cookie of its own when it checks that a visitor is not a robot.
